About John Hughes
Born and raised in South Florida, John grew up playing outside until it was dark. A small backyard garden and nearby mud pit were some of his favorite areas to play. Many years later he still enjoys moving his hands in the earth while tending to his garden beds and composting bins.
While he’s not in his garden, John is using his graphic design, photography and writing skills for The Walt Disney Company. There he has been active on several of the company’s Green Teams focusing on increasing awareness and integration of energy saving and waste reduction practices.
John and his family have been focusing on making their home more energy efficient by installing a solar water heater, radiant barrier and increased attic insulation. His front yard follows Florida Friendly landscape guidelines using a mixture of natives, fruits and perennial vegetables.
While John has studied aspects of permaculture for most of his life he only recently completed formal study, completing his Permaculture Design Course under Geoff Lawton in 2014. He has also studied the soil food web (soil microbiology) with Dr. Elaine Ingham. He is a trained volunteer with the Orange County, Florida Master Gardener program and assists with plant clinics and demonstration gardens.
John is interested in sharing space with others interested in new regenerative and increasingly sustainable living models. Active with Orlando Permaculture group. John seeks to inspire others searching for more resilient and fulfilling lives while reducing their ecological footprint.
